VANCE GARVIN

Vance presently resides and works in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he has made his home since 1972.

After spending thirty years in a career as an illustrator concentrating on architectural subjects, he turned his direction toward the fine arts in the early ninties. His formal study began at Florida State University and since has included study with New England artist Murray Wentworth and Larry Webster. Most recently Vance attended the Studio Escalier school in France studying figurative art and portrait painting with American artist Timothy Stoltz and Anthony Ryder.

Vance's work covers a wide variety of subject matter expressed in different media. He contends that this helps him to avoid falling into a rut of producing a volume of formulated artwork that looks the same. One of his favorite media is pencil, which he takes to a fully resolved level at times, as opposed to using it simply for preliminary studies. These types of drawings invlove a tedious building of values with lines that give his work a highly refined and distinctive look. The main consistent element in all his work is his unique style as a draftsman with drawing serving as the foundation from which all his work evolves.

Best known for his montage paintings of historical images and sports figures, Vance has also won awards in national design competitions and juried shows.
